Project Outline
Joey is the 10 year old son of Steve and Tamara Nelson. They live in Fair Grove, Missouri with Steve and Tamara's other two sons, Dakota, and Stephen. Joey has Mitochondrial Encephalopathy. This is a form of Muscular Dystrophy. Joey's muscles do not have the strength to sustain physical activity for very long periods of time and needs to be in a wheelchair for periods of the day. Heart 2 Heart Outreach Ministries has teamed with the community of Fair Grove to build this family a house better suited to Joey's needs. The family currently lives in a single wide 3 bedroom mobile home. Many individuals and businesses have offered their time and services as well as materials and products to help build Joey's house.

Basics of the Disease
Mitochondrial disease results from failures of the Mitochondria, specialized compartments present in every cell of the body except for red blood cells. Mitochondria are responsible for creating more than 90% of the energy needed by the body to sustain life and support growth. When they fail, less and less energy is generated within the cell. Cell injury and even cell death follow. If this process is repeated throughout the body, whole systems begin to fail, and the life of in whom this is happening is severely compromised. This disease primarily affects children, but adult onset in becoming more and more common.
Disease of the Mitochondria appear to cause the most damage to cells of the brain, heart, liver, skeletal muscles, kidney and the endocrine and respiratory systems. For more details, click here to visit Joey's Caringbridge site.
